DOG PADDLING WITH TINY: A Guide To Kayaking With A Dog

mailchimp newsltr 3 2015 wLou lives on a farm in Connecticut with her long-time boyfriend, Cecil. It is a common occurrence to see their dogs, Tiny & Deacon, sporting their orange life jackets and, one or the other, lounging on the deck of her kayak.  Her love for animals was strongly influenced by her father and grandparents at a very young age. Attending her first official dog training classes with her grandmother and their two dogs, she learned the Koehler Dog Training method. Her grandfather introduced her to horses and her father & grandfather encouraged her to communicate with animals in ways that weren’t currently being publicly explored and accepted.

pachaug river your turn 6 3 2015 wGrowing up she was involved in camping, kayaking, hiking, hunting, trapping, fishing, target shooting, horse back riding, and other outdoor activities. She attended, and graduated from, a local trade school where she studied automotive repair. Spending significant time in Vermont during those years, she developed a strong desire to one day hike the Appalachian Trail; it’s one of two items on her bucket list.

Living in Connecticut (USA) all her life, she later traveled with her son to many parts of the country. Their quest to visit every state tragically ended more than ½ way to their goal when her son passed in a car accident in 2000.  In honor of their quest to visit every state, Lou hopes to one day paddle in Hawaii in honor of her son; the second item on her bucket list!

Lou RacineShe holds an AS in Human Services with honors from QVCTC in Danielson, Connecticut, USA. Preceding her son’s fatal accident, she was working on her BS and she spent much of her time helping children.

She worked as an aide in the SPEARS program in the Putnam Middle School, supervised and coordinated an after school and summer youth program at TEEG in North Grosvenordale, tutored privately and in the Learning Lab at the college, and advocated for the children she tutored. She drew young people into everything that she did. For example, in her role as campaign manager for a local state senator, she was often accompanied by groups of students who volunteered and helped throughout the campaign. She received the 1998-1999 Youth Volunteer Award for her efforts to involve youth in community activities. Her son’s passing caused her to withdraw from these community activities. Lou hopes to re-ignite her passion for helping children and animals through her life-long love of writing.

Paddling since childhood, she continues to paddle one to three times a week, weather and time permitting.
