Stanley Hot Travel Mug Really Does Keep It Hot!

Stanley Hot Travel Mug

Stanley Classic One Hand Vacuum Mug!

I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that I enjoy a hot cup of coffee or other hot beverage while kayaking. Until now, my problem has been finding a travel mug that will actually keep my coffee hot without taking up a lot of space!  I’ve tried many…until I found the Stanley Classic One Hand Vacuum Mug!

This mug’s creators boast that it will keep hot drinks hot for up to 9 hours!  I know, I was skeptical too! I bought one and I have been using it for a few months.  I have found that this mug will keep hot coffee piping hot for about 3 – 4 hours and after that point it starts to gradually cool down some. The contents of the Stanley Classic One Hand Vaccuum Mug will maintain a lower level “hot” for about 6-7 hours and warm up to 9 hours; but, it is no longer piping hot after 3 -4 hours.  This is a great mug for the average kayaking trip and for kayak river camping.

Here are a few hints to help extend this time!  Preheat the mug by microwaving some hot water in a large coffee mug and transfer that hot water into the Stanley mug while you’re making coffee or preparing another hot liquid. Do not screw the plastic lid back on the travel mug encase the water is too hot. If you’re going to use creamer in your coffee, pour the amount of creamer to be used into the ceramic mug (after emptying the hot water into the Stanley travel mug) and microwave the creamer for no more than 20 – 40 seconds. Empty the hot water from the travel mug and add the creamer and coffee to the preheated Stanley travel mug.  This will greatly improve your success. I do this on a regular basis because I take coffee along just about every trip and this prep has resulted in having coffee so hot that I could only carefully sip it!

I also have a thermal mug holder that I built into my kayak which also helps to extend this time.  I was walking through Home Depot and the green lawn sprinkler cover (Bottom of photo left.) instantly caught my attention because my kayak is also green.  My mind instantly spun through possible uses for this item until I realized it would be about the right size for  a mug holder.  Attached to the bottom under the portion that you see in the photo, is a thermal sleeve attached with two zip ties. The sprinkler cover acts as a cover when the holder is not being used.  I will, at some point, make a video showing how to make this thermal cup holder.

The Stanley Thermal Mug is also convenient because the liquid in it can be accessed with only one hand. I admit, I dribbled coffee the first time I attempted to drink from it; but, once I got the hang of it, I loved it.  This mug can be knocked over or left on its side or upside down and it won’t spill because a button must be pressed to release the liquid–and this can be easily and comfortably done with one hand.  This system also helps to keep the contents hot longer. If this mug falls into the water, the contents will not be contaminated by the water on the outside because until the button is pressed, the liquid is sealed inside.  I wish I had tried this more expensive option before testing so many less expensive options that didn’t work out as well.
